Not long after the devastating fire that claimed the lives of five at Wedgwood Senior Living Center, firefighters announced that they had found asbestos in the third floor of the building.
Five were killed last Thursday in a crash with an oil tanker truck. The accident occurred in a South Texas oil fieldwhen a van carrying the five men ran into the tanker truck, which then burst into flames. Police said that the five men who died in the crash worked at the oilfield. Sadly, these accidents are not uncommon in the Eagle Ford Shale area just outside San Antonio.
Employers must give employees at least 60 days' notice before laying them off, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act or "WARN" Act. The falling oil prices have prompted oil and gas employers to start laying off employees, however, this does not excuse WARN Act violations. All employers that fall under these requirements, oil and gas employers included, must give their employees at least 60 days' warning before a layoff.
Last Wednesday, a two-alarm fire burned down an apartment building on the North Side of San Antonio near the North Star Mall. The fire department arrived at the La Paloma Apartments around 12:30 in the afternoon. From what the fire department could tell based on initial observation, the fire started on the second story and then spread to the attic.
