Toyota recently announced that it would be recalling thousands of popular vehicle models over a defect that could cause a loss of power steering.
Thousands of popular vehicle models are being recalled, Toyota announced, due to a defect that can cause a loss of power steering. Some of the models included in this recent Toyota recall include:
- 2015 Camry
- 2015 Camry Hybrid
- 2015 Highlander
- 2015 Highlander Hybrid
- 2014-2015 RAV4 SUVs
- 2012-2014 RAV4 EV battery vehicles
Toyota explained that the defect present in these vehicles could possibly kill the power assist mechanism that controls the power steering, causing the vehicles to suddenly lose power steering. The problem with the EV battery vehicles involves the software. According to Toyota, this defect can cause the vehicle to shift into neutral, which takes away all vehicle power. This presents an increased crash risk. Although Toyota is not aware of any injuries or deaths associated with the defects, they are issuing the recall as a precautionary measure.
CIRCUIT BOARD "MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED" DURING MANUFACTURING
According to Toyota, the power steering defect may have been caused by circuit boards that were damaged during vehicle manufacturing. While the defect would not completely impede the driver's ability to drive, the loss of power steering would make it much more difficult to steer the vehicle, causing an increased risk of crashing. In the event of power steering loss, Toyota explained that a warning light would appear on the vehicle's dashboard, alerting the driver of the problem.
