Is your morning commute really that dangerous?

by | Feb 3, 2021 | Auto Accidents

When you read car accident statistics, it really feels daunting. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people suffer injuries and nearly 40,000 people pass away in car accidents. Stats like that can make you never even want to back out of the driveway.

On the other side of the coin, though, is the way you feel during your morning commute: This is a route you’ve been driving for years. It’s comfortable. You feel safe. You’ve never even been involved in an accident, let alone one that led to a serious injury. Is it really that dangerous?

Twice each day, there’s a rising danger of accidents

When you look at the statistics surrounding car accidents, you do see a pair of peaks, and they both correspond with the daily commute times. The first happens between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. when drivers are on the way to work. Many are rushing as they try to get there on time, some are distracted by phone calls and cups of coffee, and others are still tired from waking up.

The second spike is even larger, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Again, many drivers are tired after a long day of work, while some are rushing to get home and spend time with their families. The roads tend to be packed, and that congestion increases accident odds.

What if you get seriously injured in a wreck that isn’t your fault?
