Mercedes-Benz is recalling 33,180 of its C-class and CLS-class vehicles due to concerns over gas tanks and tail lamps.
If we’re hoping that this year’s auto defect recalls don’t reflect last year’s grim figures, Mercedes’ recent recall will come as bad news. The German auto manufacturer is recalling more than 33,000 vehicles due to gas tank and tail lamp defects, just a month after the company recalled 147,224 vehicles over a fire hazard.
2015 C300 4Matic and C400 4Matic Fuel Tanks
Mercedes may have botched some of the parts that attach the fuel tanks to 2015 C300 and C400 4Matics, said the auto manufacturer. Employees at the company’s plant in Alabama said that they had to remove the fuel tanks from more than 3,000 vehicles because various components were not attached to the tanks properly. When the workers put the tanks back in, they may have done so incorrectly, a manufacturing error that could cause the gas tanks to leak or fuel pumps to shut down completely.
2012-2015 CLS Vehicle Taillamp Recalls
In a separate recall, Mercedes said that the tail lights on various CLS-class cars might not be bright enough to meet federal standards. Mercedes thinks that the dimness may have been caused by improper programming of the LED lights. The tail lamp issues account for 30,141 of Mercedes’ recalls while the fuel tank issues affected 3,039 vehicles.
Mercedes recently issued a fairly large recall of 147,224 of its E and CLS-class cars due to a potential fire hazard caused by defective rubber seals, and about a year ago, the auto manufacturer recalled over 250,000 vehicles due to defective tail lamps.
Auto manufacturers issue recalls for a wide range of defects, from minor to severe. Sometimes the recalls are issued before any injuries are reported and other times companies do not issue recalls until after multiple consumer complaints.
