Residents Displaced After Fire At Westwood Plaza Apartments In San Antonio

A two-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building on the west side of San Antonio yesterday. Fire crews responded to reports of a fire at Westwood Plaza Apartments. 14 apartment units were damaged in the blaze leaving several residents displaced until repairs are complete. There were no injuries but the estimated damages total around $125,000. Officials have not yet released the cause of the accident, only saying that it was exacerbated by high winds.

Thursday's fire at Westwood Plaza Apartments resulted in several residents being displaced. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but officials say it was "fueled by high winds."

One can only think back to the Wedgwood apartment fire that occurred just three months ago. That fire left five people dead and several others with serious injuries such as burns and respiratory difficulty due to smoke inhalation. Investigators determined that the apartment building, while it did have smoke detectors, did not have a sprinkler system because of the building's age.

Building owners and apartment management companies are responsible for the safety of their tenants to a certain degree. For example, they must provide and maintain certain safety features like smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system. Landlord/tenant law can be complex as there are state and federal safety codes as well as municipal building codes that factor into the equation.
