Fires Caused by Home Appliances

According to news reports, at around 10 p.m. on November 2, 2018, a two alarm building fire broke out in a townhouse in southwest Houston, killing one man and injuring his 36-year-old son.  Wyatt Law Firm, Ltd. (www.wyattlawfirm.com) expresses our condolences to the family and our hope that the son's injuries are not life threatening.

Building fires such as this can be caused by defective electrical components in common household appliances such as fans, heaters, dishwashers, toasters, and televisions, to name a few.  Appliances that catch fire often times are built with internal electrical components manufactured overseas that fail to meet safety standards.   While defects in the components of some appliances are discovered by manufacturers and the products are recalled, often times the defects go unnoticed until tragedy, such as a fire, strikes.

If you are concerned about any of the appliances in your home and want to know if it has been recalled, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes a Recall List online which can be accessed at the following web page:  www.cpsc.gov/Recalls.
