When employees go to work, they generally don’t think that they might not be coming home. Unfortunately, that happens all too often to workers across the country. When a fatal workplace accident happens, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration conducts an investigation to determine exactly what happened and whether the employer was negligent in any way that may have caused the incident. This is exactly what OSHA representatives are doing after one worker died in a recent trench collapse on a construction site here in Texas.
According to authorities, the accident happened at a construction site for an apartment complex. At this time, they have not released any details about exactly how the trench collapsed. One worker had to be rushed to a nearby hospital, but died there. Two other workers were taken to the hospital with injuries and one of them has been released.
OSHA could take as long as six months in order to complete its investigation. If the victims’ company is found to have violated safety regulations, it could face significant fines. The company has not spoken publicly about the accident or about OSHA’s investigation.
Though the construction industry is known to be one that often carries risk to employees, there are still many ways to keep employees safe on the job. Companies should always use any and all available safety measures to prevent a workplace accident. If accidents happen to employees while at work, they or their families typically have a right to receive workers’ compensation.
