Class-Action Lawsuit Filed Over Samsung’s Exploding Washing Machines

Samsung has more to worry about than just cellphones that catch fire. In August, a federal lawsuit was filed against Samsung, alleging negligence in the design and manufacture of certain washing machine models.

The problem? The lawsuit alleges that excess vibration can cause the assembly holding the washer tub to "become unfastened, resulting in a dramatic centrifugal explosion that destroys the machine and nearby property." The problem is particularly acute when washing very heavy loads. To minimize the possibility of an explosion, owners of Samsung machines should use the delicate cycle when washing bedding, water-resistant and bulky items.

More than a month after the lawsuit was filed, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a statement expressing its concern over safety issues with Samsung washing machines. The statement does not list specific models. The Commission is currently working with Samsung to address these issues.

According to the lawsuit "Samsung knowingly, affirmatively and actively misrepresented and concealed the true character, quality and nature of the washing machines and sold the washing machines into the stream of commerce as if they were safe for use..."

For its part, Samsung has issued a warning to consumers and created a web page where owners of its washing machines can check to see if their model is covered by the warning. The problem affects only certain top-loading models manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016. Front-loading Samsung washing machine models are not included in the warning.

Manufacturers have a duty to build and market products that are safe for their intended uses. If you or a loved one has been harmed by a defective product, you should seek the advice of an experienced product liability attorney.
