Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

El Paso, TX – 12-Year-Old Girl Fatally Struck by Ford Pickup Truck on Loop 375In 2021, the state of Texas saw more than 100 pedestrians lose their lives as a result of motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents continues to increase year after year despite the number of pedestrian laws we have in place to protect them.

The majority of pedestrian accidents that result in fatal injuries are caused by driver negligence. Some of the leading factors in these collisions include:

  • Speeding drivers: Speed is a leading cause of fatal accidents because it increases the chances of losing control of the vehicle and decreases the amount of time that drivers have to react to hazards.
  • Driver distractions: Distraction is another common cause of fatal accidents. Text messaging, talking on the phone, or even just having an animated conversation with passengers can all take a driver’s attention away from the road.
  • Impaired drivers: Impairment also plays a role in fatal accidents. Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, or fatigue, any type of impairment can make it difficult for drivers to operate their vehicles safely.
  • Failing to yield: Drivers who fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians are likely to cause fatal collisions.
