Vega, NM (March 1, 2023) – A pileup collision in the Vega area resulted in two fatalities and two injuries on Monday, February 27.
At around 7:40 a.m., the deadly crash took place on Interstate 40, about 10 miles outside of Vega. It was first reported that a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by 82-year-old Olin Hood of Ojai, California, was stopped on the interstate. The truck was then rear-ended by a 2019 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer operated by 37-year-old Cain Rangel-Ramirez of Bakersfield, California.
After this initial crash, 31-year-old Frantz Maxi of Covington, Georgia, was operating a Freightliner tractor-trailer. Maxi veered to the left of the center and collided with the semi-trailer. This impact caused both rigs to catch on fire.
Both Rangel-Ramirez and Hood were left with fatal injuries and pronounced dead at the scene. Maxi and a passenger in the Freightliner, later identified as 28-year-old Edwin Theodora of Lehigh Acres, Florida, were taken by ambulance to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital. No updates on their conditions have been provided at this time.
An ongoing investigation into the cause of the collision is underway.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of Olin Hood and Cain Rangel-Ramirez at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Deadly Trucking Accidents in New Mexico
There are a lot of 18-wheelers on Texas roads every day because the state is a hub for trade and transportation. Since there are more semi-trucks and longer stretches of major highways in Texas than in other states, it would make sense that the state would be the site of a greater number of trucking accidents. Of the 4,237 crashes that occurred countrywide in 2017, Texas had the most fatal truck collision instances, accounting for 556 of these collisions that year.
