This number of fatalities continues to increase, despite the number of laws we have to protect people traveling outside of vehicles. There are many factors that contribute to pedestrian fatalities, but some of the most common include:

  • Distracted driving: Drivers who are texting, talking on the phone, or otherwise distracted are more likely to hit pedestrians
  • Speeding: Higher speeds make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and stop in time if they do spot someone
  • Intoxication: Both drivers and pedestrians are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a crash if they have been drinking alcohol
  • Bad weather: Low visibility due to rain, fog, or darkness can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, particularly if they are not wearing reflective clothing
