Houston, TX (January 25, 2022) – A crash reported in Harris County on Monday morning, January 24, has taken the life of a Harris County Sheriff’s Sergeant.

Just after midnight on January 24, emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash on East Sam Houston Parkway North.

Reports from authorities show that 45-year-old Ramon Gutierrez, an off-duty Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant, was working traffic control for a convoy of oversized machinery. As the man guarded the scene, he was struck by a vehicle.

Gutierrez was airlifted from the scene of the crash to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, 40-year-old Lavillia Spry, fled the scene of the accident. She was later apprehended and taken into custody for failure to stop and render aid, intoxication manslaughter, and evading arrest.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Ramon Gutierrez. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
