Why 18-wheelers Require A Different Speed Limit

by | Nov 25, 2015 | Truck Accidents | 0 comments

Have you ever been stuck behind a tractor-trailer or big rig and felt frustration at the speed at which they were driving? Did it feel like they were going much slower than all the other cars passing you by? Before you start getting road rage, however, know that if it feels like the trucks are driving at a slower speed, it is probably because they are!

Texas has one of the highest speed limits in the nation. Most highways cap the limit for cars and small vehicles at 75 miles per hour. That is 10 miles per hour higher than most other states. However, while most cars can go faster, trucks, tractor-trailers, and big rigs must abide by certain limitations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, larger vehicles carrying an excess amount of weight must drive no faster than 60 miles per hour during the day and no faster than 55 miles per hour during the night. These stipulations are enforced for the safety of the truck driver and all the other surrounding vehicles.

Because vehicles such as semi-trucks and 18-wheelers can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, they must adhere to specialized rules. The extra weight and sheer size of the automobile limits its mobility and maneuverability. According to John D. Esperanza, president of the Texas Truck Association, truck accidents account for 14% of all crashes that occur. Given the extensive damage these vehicles can cause, that number is too high.

Big rigs and 18-wheelers have reduced speed limits because:

  • Excessively fast speeds can wear on tires and cause them to pop
  • They require more time accelerating or decelerating
  • They have slower response times to other cars
  • They need to function at slower speed to be safe in extreme weather

Trucking accidents can cause severe damage and possible fatality. It is important that all vehicles abide by the rules and share the highway.
